What is the sacral chakra?
The sacral chakra, also called the Svadhisthana chakra in Sanskrit, is the second of seven energy centers in the human body.
The chakra system, when in balance, allows our life force energy to flow freely and create harmony in our physical and emotional well-being. The sacral chakra, being located at below the navel, is associated with creative and sensual energies. When this chakra is open, we feel a deep well of creativity and pleasure.
Sacral chakra location
The sacral chakra is located is located in the lower abdomen, below the navel. It’s associated with our sex organs — hence the relationship between this chakra and sensuality.
Sacral chakra color
The sacral chakra is associated with the color orange.
Each of the main chakras is associated with its respective color in the rainbow. The first chakra, the root chakra, is partnered with red. The second, the sacral chakra, orange, and so one. The solar plexus chakra is associated with yellow, the heart chakra green, the throat chakra blue, the third eye chakra indigo, and the crown chakra violet.
The color orange is thought to vibrate at the same frequency as the sacral chakra. For this reason, you may see the color orange in your mind’s eye when you do a sacral chakra meditation. Or you may choose to visualize the color orange to trigger the reciprocal effect: to activate the energy of the sacral chakra.
Sacral chakra symbol
The sacral chakra symbol consists of six lotus flower petals, a circle, and a crescent moon with the Seed Mantra in the center. The symbol of the lotus flower is associated with the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth and is part of the symbol for each of the seven chakras — represented with a different number of petals in each case.
Petals: The six petals of the lotus flower in the sacral chakra symbol are thought to represent the six traits we have to overcome in order to purify our sacral energy. These traits are:
Wrath
Hate
Cruelty
Jealousy
Lust
Pride
Circle: The circle represents continuous flow – just like the element that the sacral chakra is associated with: water. The circle in the symbol and the element of water both remind us that energy is in perpetual motion and pleasure comes from the flow itself, rather than any end results.
Crescent Moon: The moon is long associated with flow (think of the tides), creativity, and femininity. Since the sacral chakra is the energy center of creative expression and sexual energy, the moon is an apt representation of energy in the symbol.
Blocked sacral chakra symptoms
A blocked or unbalanced sacral chakra can affect our physical and emotional health. Symptoms of a sacral chakra blockage range from physical problems like difficulty in the bedroom or reproductive issues to mental/emotional problems like lack of creativity and loneliness. Here are some of the most common symptoms, both physical and emotional, that are associated with a blocked second chakra. (I am not a medical professional and it’s important to remember there is always a time and a place to seek medical attention.)
Physical symptoms of a blocked sacral chakra
Low libido
The sacral chakra is our energy center responsible for passion and sexuality. When it’s blocked you may feel a disinterest in sex and experience low libido.
Fertility issues
The sacral chakra is thought to be associated with our divine feminine energy so when it is blocked, our reproductive organs may not be working work optimally and fertility issues may arise.
Menstrual issues
Being the chakra associated with flow, the moon, and divine feminine energy, a blockage of the second chakra may lead to menstruation issues.
Sexual dysfunction
The sacral chakra is where we divine our sexual and passionate energy. When it’s blocked, we lose confidence and connection to pleasure, leading to sexual dysfunction.
Low energy
Any blocked chakra can drastically impact the amount of intrinsic energy we experience throughout the day. A blocked second chakra in particular can lead to a loss of sense of pleasure and passion in life, making us feel low-energy and even experiencing chronic fatigue.
Ovarian cysts
Some people have reported that a sacral chakra blockage manifests as ovarian cysts. Since the blockage interferes with the body’s natural flow, it’s no surprise that our sexual organs, in this case the ovaries, may experience a physical imbalance.
Bowel, bladder, or urinary tract issues
Whenever a particular chakra is blocked, you may notice dysfunction in any of your organs/muscles/etc in the surrounding area due to the stifled flow of energy in. In this case, since the sacral chakra is located at the belly button, bowel, bladder, or urinary tract issues could all be signs of a blockage.
Hip, pelvic, or lower back pain
When energy isn’t flowing properly in our bodies, we may experience generalized pain near the site of the energy blockage. Hip, pelvic, lower back, or other lower body pain may be a sign of a blocked sacral chakra.
Mental/Emotional symptoms of a blocked sacral chakra
Disinterest in sex
If you’ve been feeling apathetic or even repulsed by sex lately and barely have any interest in cultivating personal pleasure, it could be a sign that your sacral chakra, your sexual and sensual energy center, is blocked.
Disinterest in romantic relationships
A blocked sacral chakra can make us feel the opposite of sexy and flirty. If your second chakra is blocked, you may find that you haven’t had any motivation to find or keep romantic relationships.
Lack of creativity
Creativity is directly linked to our ability to tap into flow and passion. When these emotions are blocked due to a second chakra imbalance, you may find yourself going through a creative block.
Apathy
A lack of interest in sensory pleasure, like food, sex, art etc. can be a sign of a blocked or misaligned sacral chakra.
Low self-esteem
Sexuality and sensuality are important factors in the divine feminine energy that we each have access to. When the connection to this sacral chakra energy is blocked, you may feel cut off from your personal power and experience low confidence and low self-esteem.
Isolation
A lack of interest in being around other people and a sense of loneliness or being out of place could be symptoms of a closed sacral chakra.
Jealousy
When it’s balanced, the sacral chakra helps us to feel confident and secure. When it’s out of balance, we may feel insecure – leading to jealousy, envy, and judgement of others.
Guilt/Shame
A sacral chakra blockage may interfere with your sense of personal power. When left unbalanced, this may lead to emotional spirals that leave you feeling guilty or shameful over events in your life – taking on the responsibility for things that you cannot control.
Anxiety
An chakra unbalance often leads to anxiety because it’s uncomfortable to feel disconnected from our potential and from our higher selves. It’s important to cheek all of our chakras open and aligned in order to maintain good mental health.
Lack of motivation
Lack of motivation comes hand in hand with the low energy and low self-esteem that may be symptoms of a blocked sacral chakra. It can feel like trying to move mountains when we try to get things done without any intrinsic motivation or zest for life.
How to unblock the sacral chakra
If the symptoms of a blocked sacral chakra are familiar to you, it may be a sign that your chakra system needs a little TLC. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to unblock and balance each of the different energy centers. Here are some of the most powerful ways you can heal the sacral chakra to tap into your creativity, passion, sensuality, and zest for life.
Meditation
Meditation is one of the best ways to improve your chakra health. Since meditation is a way to calm your nervous system and tap into your intrinsic energy, you can use a meditation practice to open your sacral chakra and restore your body’s natural flow of energy.
Some people like to use a color meditation to balance chakras. As we discussed earlier, each chakra is associated with a particular color of the rainbow. Since the sacral chakra is the orange chakra, you may choose to meditate on the visualization of an orange light glowing and filling the space near your belly button. Remember to be patient with your meditation practice and work up to longer sittings.

Yoga Poses
Yoga poses, or yoga asanas, are a traditional tool for helping to restore physical and emotional wellbeing. A yoga practice in general might be very helping in balancing and maintaining balance in the chakra system. A few specific poses that may help to unblock the sacral chakra are Hero Pose, Pigeon Pose, and Goddess Pose.

Sacral Chakra Crystals
Crystals are an excellent way to align yourself with a particular vibration in order to create flow and harmony in your chakras. An easy way to determine which stones to use for which chakra is to choose the stone based on the color. Each chakra is associated with its own color that corresponds to the energy of its aura. Since the sacral chakra is the orange chakra, it’s a safe bet to use orange crystals to align and open the Svadhisthana chakra.
Three orange gemstones that can act as sacral chakra healing stones are Tiger’s Eye, Orange Calcite, and Sunstone.
Tiger’s eye
Tiger’s eye is a stone that’s powerful in renewing the energy of all of your chakras. It offers a great balance between helping you feel grounded while also inspiring creativity and forward momentum. Tiger’s Eye is a great gem for sacral chakra healing since it can restore your creative power and lust for life without knocking you off you center.
Orange Calcite
Orange calcite is full of exactly the energy it exudes from its appearance: warm, sunny, fun-loving, and inviting. Orange calcite can act as a sacral chakra crystal and help to clear the apathy and fatigue you may be feeling and replace it with a new sense of vitality.
Sunstone
Sunstone, like its name suggests, is all about warm, life-giving energy. Sunstone is a great sacral chakra crystal because it can imbue you with a lighthearted, playful sense of wellbeing.
Sacral chakra foods
Our diet is directly linked to our well-being, both physical and mental. Since the sacral chakra is the orange chakra, foods that vibrate at that frequency – orange foods – may be the most helpful in opening and balancing the second chakra. Some orange foods you may add to your diet are oranges, mangos, orange peppers, and peaches. You can also think of “comfort foods” as sacral chakra foods. These are things like root veggies (sweet potatoes and carrots are great since they’re also orange) and other rich foods.
Essential oils
Essential oils are a powerful and quick way to open your sacral chakra. Our sense of smell is an immediate hijack of our brain that can change our mood instantly. Three essential oils associate with the sacral chakra are sweet orange, sandalwood, and bergamot. You can add one of these essential oils to a diffuser, dab a small drop on the inside of your wrist to smell throughout the day, or include a couple of drops in a bath before bed.
Sweet Orange – helps spark creativity
Sandalwood – helps rebuild confidence
Bergamot – helps alleviate anxiety
Sacral chakra mantra
The sacral chakra mantra is “Vam.” “Vam” is a Bija mantra, or single-syllable mantra, that can be chanted to connect with the second chakra. The Bija mantras are also called “seed” mantras because using these mantras is like watering the seeds of our souls.
Sacral chakra affirmations
A good sacral chakra affirmation is any statement that reminds you that you are innately powerful and unique. Here are three affirmations you may use throughout the day or during meditation or journaling:
Creative energy naturally flows to me and through me.
I am safe to share intimacy with other people.
I am a vessel for universal inspiration, love, joy, and creativity.
