If you’ve never heard of Hygge, this is the year to add it to your vocabulary. And more importantly, your life! (Btw, it’s pronounced “hoo-gah.”) Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian concept that captures the feeling of coziness, warmth, contentment, and everything lovely. Imagine sitting by a fireplace in an aesthetic log cabin, sipping a cup of tea, and reading your favorite book. That feeling? That’s Hygge.

This winter, transform a room or a nook into a cozy sanctuary with soft blankets, warm socks, books, candles, gentle lighting, and anything else that makes you feel like you’re wrapped up in a hug. This self-care environment will become the perfect retreat during cold-weather months. You can create a morning, evening, or weekend ritual out of spending a little time in this new sacred space – your Hygge Haven.

I know, braving the cold doesn’t exactly scream “cozy.”  But a mindful afternoon walk can be surprisingly refreshing and uplifting and the perfect way to maximize the joy you get from your hot bevvy in your Hygge Haven once you get home. Winter is a time of rest and renewal so your normal exercise routine might not work for you the way it usually does. Walks are a beautiful way to connect with nature, clear your mind, and breathe in the crisp, cool fresh air. Plus, stepping outside during the day lets you soak in any natural sunlight – an instant mood booster in these darker months.

Bundle up in your favorite scarf and gloves, and leave your phone behind (or at least on silent). As you walk, pay attention to the sounds around you: the crunch of snow or leaves underfoot, the rustle of bare branches in the breeze.
